The moves that go sideways almost never do so because of the packing. It's the forgotten stuff, the society NOC nobody asked for until the truck was at the gate, the fridge that wasn't defrosted, the address that didn't get updated. None of it is hard, it just needs doing before the day rather than on it. Here's the rough timeline we'd give a friend.
About a month out
This is decluttering time, and it's the single best thing you can do for the cost of your move. You pay to move volume, so anything you sell, give away or bin now is money saved and a lighter day later. Be honest about the stuff you've not touched in a year.
It's also when to book the movers. Good crews fill up, especially around month-end and weekends, so getting the survey done and the date locked early gives you the pick of slots. And if you're renting, dig out your agreement and check the notice period and any conditions on getting your deposit back.
A couple of weeks before
Start the paperwork that takes time to come through. If you're in an apartment, ask your society what they need for a move-out, a lot of them want a gate pass, a lift booking, sometimes an NOC or a deposit, and the same goes for the building you're moving into. Sorting both ends now means the crew isn't stuck at security on the day while someone hunts for the secretary.
This is the point to start changing your address where it matters, bank, workplace, any subscriptions and deliveries. Book any disconnections and reconnections too, gas, internet, and arrange a school transfer if there are kids. Begin packing the things you plainly won't need before the move, off-season clothes, books, the good crockery you only use for guests.
The last week
Pack in earnest now, room by room, and keep a running box of essentials aside, the kettle, chargers, a change of clothes, basic toiletries, any medicines, so your first night in the new place isn't a treasure hunt. Label as you go.
Run down the fridge and the freezer so there's less to throw out, and plan to defrost it a full day before the move, a fridge needs to travel dry and empty. Confirm the date and timing with your movers, and set aside the things you'll carry yourself rather than send on the truck, documents, jewellery, laptops, the valuables that simply shouldn't leave your hands.
Moving day itself
By now the work should mostly be done and the day is about the lift and shift. Do a walk-through with the crew supervisor so everyone's clear on what's going and what's staying, and point out anything especially fragile or heavy up front.
Before you hand back the keys, check the obvious hiding spots one last time, the loft, the balcony, behind doors, the back of cupboards, something always gets left. And keep your phone charged and that essentials box with you rather than on the truck. That's really it. If the earlier weeks were done properly, moving day is the easy part.
The bits people forget entirely
A few things fall through the cracks on almost every move, so it's worth a quick list of the usual suspects. Return anything that isn't yours, library books, a neighbour's borrowed drill, the gas cylinder that's on deposit. Collect anything being repaired or dry-cleaned. Empty the letterbox and set up mail forwarding if you can.
Then there's the digital housekeeping nobody enjoys: updating your address on Aadhaar and with your bank, moving your KYC, switching the delivery address on the apps you actually use. It takes twenty minutes and saves a parcel going to the old flat a month later. And take meter readings, electricity and water, on the way out, so the final bill is yours and not the next tenant's.
If you're moving with kids or pets
Small children and animals don't care about your timeline, and moving day is loud, open-door chaos, exactly the kind they slip out of. If you can, park them with a relative or a friend for the day itself. Everyone's calmer for it, and the crew can work without watching the front door.
If that's not an option, set aside one room that gets packed last and unpacked first, with their familiar things in it, a few toys, the pet's bed and bowl, so there's one calm corner in the middle of the upheaval. Carry their essentials with you rather than on the truck, and keep the vet's number and any medicines to hand.
