The Full Picture

Appliances break in transit for boring, avoidable reasons

Almost nothing that goes wrong with a fridge or a washing machine in a move is dramatic. A fridge laid on its side has oil run out of the compressor into the cooling lines, then it is plugged in the same evening and never cools properly again. A washing machine loaded with the drum loose has the suspension take the whole journey on Outer Ring Road, and it starts walking across the floor on its first spin. Both of those are preparation problems, and both take ten minutes to avoid.

So appliances are treated as their own part of the job here rather than as large boxes. They come off the power and the water properly, they get prepared for the road, they are wrapped, and they are set back up and left standing level at the other end.

What each one actually needs

Fridges travel upright, always. We defrost and drain them the day before, tape the doors, and once the unit is standing in the new kitchen we ask you to leave it a few hours before switching on so the oil settles back where it belongs. Front-load washing machines get their transit bolts refitted if you still have them, and where you do not, the drum gets packed out so it cannot swing. Water inlet and drain hoses come off and travel taped to the back of the machine.

Screens are the fragile ones. A television goes into a foam-lined carton, or its original box if you have kept it, and it travels upright between padded boards, never flat with anything resting on it. Wall mounts come off the wall with the fixings bagged, and the bracket goes with the set.

Geysers, water purifiers, dishwashers and microwaves all come off their plumbing and their power, get their fittings bagged, and go back up at the new place where the point exists. Chimneys and built-in hobs we look at during the survey, because whether one comes out cleanly depends entirely on how it was fitted.

Air conditioners, and where the line is

Air conditioners are the appliance people ask about most and the one where it pays to be straight with you. Moving the unit itself, taking the indoor and outdoor halves off their brackets, bagging the fixings, protecting the coil faces and the copper, and carrying it all safely, is our work and it is in the quote.

Refrigerant handling is a different trade. Pumping down a split system, brazing, a fresh gas charge, drilling a new core hole in the wall at the new flat, that is a qualified AC technician's job and it should be priced as one. We tell you at the survey which of those your unit will need, and it goes into the estimate as its own line rather than being buried in a moving charge. Window units are simpler and usually come out and go back in the same day.

Booking it on its own, or as part of a move

You do not need a full house shift to book this. A single fridge going from Marathahalli to a new flat in Hennur is a perfectly normal job, and so is a washing machine, an AC and a TV moving while the rest of the furniture stays behind for the next tenant.

Where it is part of a bigger move the appliances simply get their own slot in the plan. We would rather disconnect the fridge the evening before than have it defrosting into a kitchen the crew is trying to pack. Everything is checked and switched on in front of you at the far end where the connection allows it, and a GST invoice follows either way. Optional transit insurance on declared value is available if you want cover on the expensive items.

FAQ

AC & Appliance Shifting, answered

The questions people ask most about ac & appliance shifting — and if yours isn't here, a real person picks up the phone.

We take the unit down, protect it, move it and put it back on its brackets. The refrigerant side — pump-down, brazing, a gas charge, drilling a new core hole — is a licensed technician's trade, so we identify what your unit needs at the survey and quote that separately instead of hiding it inside a moving charge.

Because compressor oil runs into the cooling lines when it is on its side, and switching the fridge on before that oil drains back can leave it cooling badly for good. It travels upright, and once it is in place we ask you to wait a few hours before plugging it in. It is the single most common way a fridge gets ruined in a move.

Yes, and it is a common booking, especially for people leaving a furnished rental. Tell us which appliances, the floor and the lift at both ends, and we will quote just those rather than pricing it as a house shift.

It depends on how many units there are, which ones need disconnection work, and the access at both ends. A free survey settles all of that, and you get one firm written figure on GST afterwards. Where a technician's visit is needed for an AC that appears as its own line so you can see what you are paying for.

Most people have. The set goes into a foam-lined carton of the right size instead, with the screen face protected and the whole thing carried upright between padded boards. The wall bracket comes off with its fixings bagged and travels with the set.

We reconnect and position them where the point and the plumbing exist, level the washing machine, refit hoses, put the TV back on its bracket and switch things on in front of you where we can. If a new point or fresh plumbing is needed at the new flat, that is an electrician or plumber's job and we will tell you so at the survey.
