One of the old city's planned grids, and still tight

Packers and movers in Chamrajpet are working one of Bangalore's oldest planned localities, just south-west of City Market and next door to Basavanagudi. It was laid out long ago on a neat grid of numbered main roads and cross roads, which sounds like it should make a move easy, and in one way it does, you can actually find the address. The catch is that the lanes between those crosses are narrow, parked solid on both sides for most of the day, and the homes are old and full.

This is a long-settled neighbourhood, families have held the same houses for generations here, so the housing runs to old independent homes and compact upper floors rather than lift-served towers. A lot of it sits around Albert Victor Road and the inner crosses near the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, close enough to the market that the trade spills into the residential streets. The moves are the careful kind, decades of a household's things, heavy old teak and steel almirahs, and a stair to bring it all down.

So the surveyor here spends real time on the street as much as inside the house, working out which cross the truck can actually stand on, how far the carry runs, and whether a smaller tempo has to feed a bigger vehicle parked out on a wider road.

Parking, the market crowd, and the hour you move

The hardest part of a Chamrajpet day isn't the driving, it's finding a place to stand the vehicle. Kerb space on the crosses fills early and stays full, and a crew that turns up to nowhere to park loses an hour before it lifts a box. We plan the loading spot ahead and, where it helps, get there early to hold it before the street wakes up.

Being this close to City Market and Kalasipalya cuts both ways. Most of the city is a short drive, so a move over to Basavanagudi, Hanumanthanagar or Jayanagar is quick, but the roads through the market choke through the day and a loaded truck stuck in that is just money standing still. We load early to keep it clear of the worst.

Where a lane genuinely won't take a full-size truck, and a few of the inner crosses won't, we run a tempo to the door and shuttle to a larger vehicle on the main road. It's a bit more handling and we say so honestly, still far quicker than wedging a big truck where it can't turn around.

What a Chamrajpet move costs

The city ranges apply here, ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 for a 1 BHK, ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 for a 2 BHK, and ₹9,000 to ₹25,000 for a 3 BHK, with the older family homes trending toward the top of their band because the volumes and the heavy furniture run higher than a modern flat of the same size. A short hop within the old south-central belt keeps you low. A move out to the far suburbs climbs from there.

What really moves the number is access, not the kilometres. A short carry to a truck at the gate is quick, a long carry down a parked-up cross to a shuttle, with an old internal staircase in the mix, takes time and more hands, and that's the part you see on the bill.
