The carry is the job
On plots of this size the arithmetic changes. In a tight city centre the problem is finding anywhere to park; here you can park, but the front door may be a long way from the gate and the gate may be a long way from where the truck can turn. Every box, every wrapped chair and every dismantled bed frame covers that distance on somebody's shoulder.
That's crew hours, and crew hours are most of what a local move actually costs. It's also the thing a phone quote never accounts for, which is precisely why a cheap number given without seeing the property tends to grow once the crew is standing in your driveway.
Our surveyor paces it rather than estimating it. A video survey walked from the road to the door shows the whole thing in a couple of minutes.
Old gates, mature gardens
Compound gates around here were frequently built when a car was the largest thing anyone expected to bring in, so the road out front taking a full-size truck comfortably doesn't mean the gate will. Where the vehicle has to stand outside, the carry gets longer again and that goes into the quote honestly rather than being absorbed by a crew that then rushes.
Established gardens bring their own considerations. Low branches over a driveway can rule out a high-sided vehicle even where the width is fine, and a gravel or unmade approach softens after heavy rain in a way that makes putting a loaded truck on it a poor idea.
None of this is unusual and all of it is plannable. It just wants looking at first.
Turning space deserves its own mention, because it is the one people forget. A truck that gets in but cannot turn has to reverse back out down whatever it came in on, and on a long drive with a wall one side and a garden the other that is slow, tense work that nobody enjoys. Where there is no room to turn, we would generally rather stand the vehicle on the road and accept the longer carry than take it in and have to bring it back out blind.
Water on the doorstep
Being close to Ashtamudi is lovely and it means humidity is a constant rather than a season. Anything that's been standing in a closed room for years — wooden furniture especially, but also books, papers and soft furnishings — can be in a different condition than the last look suggested.
Practically that means wrapping properly rather than casually, keeping cartons off the ground while a load is being staged, and being realistic that some pieces will want more careful handling than their age alone implies. Through the monsoon months waterproof outer covers go on as standard.
If your date is flexible, December to March is comfortably the easier stretch on this coast.
