Bike Shifting in Tavarekere

Tavarekere fills with students every term and empties every vacation. The PGs and shared flats off the main road house a lot of people studying in the colleges around BTM and Koramangala, and when the long break comes, they go home for weeks or months. The bike is the thing they don't quite know what to do with.

There are really three choices. Leave it at the PG, send it home and bring it back for the next term, or put it in storage for the gap. Each has its place. The right one depends on how long you're away, what the PG will allow, and whether you'll want the bike at home.

Option one: leave it at the PG

If you're coming back to the same PG after a few weeks, and the owner is happy for the bike to stay in its usual spot, this is the cheapest answer by far. Ask first, though. Some PGs need the parking for new tenants during the break, and a bike left without permission can end up moved, blocked in or worse.

If it stays, prepare it. Run the tank low, put a cover on it, lock the steering and use a disc lock if you have one. Leave the key with someone you trust and tell the warden who that is. A bike parked for two months on a busy lane also tends to collect a few scratches from other people's handlebars, so photograph it before you go.

This option doesn't work if you're changing PGs, or if the term ends with a lease ending too, which is common in Tavarekere.

Option two: send it home and bring it back

If you'll actually use the bike at home, or you're not sure you'll come back to the same address, sending it home makes sense. It's two trips, home at the start of the vacation and back at the end, but you have the bike for the whole break and it isn't sitting in a lane for months.

Book both legs together if you know the dates. The return leg is the one people forget until term is a week away, and by then every other student is trying to get their bike back too.

Think about the monsoon too. If your vacation falls in the rains and home is somewhere wet, a bike parked outdoors at home for two months may fare worse than one stored dry in Bangalore. Not a reason on its own, but worth weighing.

Families sometimes find the bike useful while it's home, a parent or a sibling riding it for the summer. If so, check the insurance is current before it goes.

Option three: store it for the gap

If your PG won't keep the bike, and you won't use it at home, storage covers the gap. The bike is collected, photographed and wrapped, kept until you're back, and delivered to whichever PG or flat you've moved to for the next term.

It also takes the bike off your mind during exams. The last fortnight of term is the worst time to be arranging a parking spot, finding someone to hold a key or negotiating with a PG owner. Book the storage once the exam timetable is out and it's one less thing.

That last bit is the advantage. A lot of students change addresses between terms, and storage means the bike goes straight to the new place rather than to the old one.

Storage is charged for the weeks the bike is held, and you'll see it on the quote alongside the two deliveries.

Scooty shifting for students

Most student bikes in Tavarekere are scooties, nimble in the crowded lanes and kind on a student's pocket. Whichever of the three options you choose, a scooty is the least expensive bike to move or store, because it's light and small.

When it does travel, it gets the treatment a motorcycle would, a set of pictures first, then cushioning at the mirrors and bars, a few turns of wrap, and straps holding it on its wheels. Clear out the boot, especially the college ID and anything you'll need at home.

Bike and two wheeler transport from Tavarekere's lanes

The lanes off the Tavarekere main road are narrow, packed with parked two-wheelers and one-way in places. Our vehicle pulls up wherever the street opens out, usually on the main road, and the bike is brought to it on foot. End of term is busy, so book early, and ask the warden to make sure the bikes around yours can be moved that morning.

If you're travelling home the same day the bike is collected, book the pickup early enough that you aren't watching the clock at the station. A bike handed over at seven leaves the rest of the day free for the train or bus.

Silk Board is close, so pickups are early. Students heading home are often going to Chennai, Hyderabad, Kerala or a smaller town in Karnataka or Andhra. The big cities are routine, small towns less frequent, and we'll say which at the quote.

The fuel comes out before loading. Put photocopies of the registration and your ID in the bike's envelope, plus a signed note from a parent if the RC is in their name, which for a student's bike it often is. You'll have a written price with GST before booking, and if a room's worth of things is going home too, the Tavarekere packers page covers that.
