Bike Transport Services in BTM Layout

BTM Layout is full of people who arrived in Bangalore with a suitcase and sorted out transport later. Plenty of them rent a bike or a scooter on a monthly subscription rather than buying one, and some end up with both, a rented scooter for daily use and their own motorcycle that came from home or was bought second-hand.

When it's time to leave, those two bikes need opposite treatment. Your own bike can go on a carrier to wherever you're heading. A rented or subscription bike belongs to the company that leased it, and it goes back to them, however tempting it is to keep it for one more month in the new city.

Rented bikes go back to the company

If the RC of the bike is in a rental company's name, it isn't yours to send anywhere. Sending it to another city without the company's written agreement is a problem we won't help create, and the company will usually be billing you for every day it's away. Check your rental agreement for the return process and the notice it wants, and book the return before you book anything else.

Most rental and subscription companies collect the bike from you or have a drop point in the city. Plan the return for the last day you need it, and if you're relying on it for the final commute, line up a cab for the moving day itself.

Before you hand it back, take your own photos of its condition, and empty it of everything that's yours, the phone mount you bought, the cover, the spare helmet. Those are the things that disappear into a rental company's depot.

If a company has genuinely agreed in writing to the bike being moved, for example because it's being transferred to their branch in your new city, show us that letter at booking. Without it, we'll only move a bike the sender owns or has the owner's permission for.

Your own bike, out of BTM

Your own bike is the straightforward part. BTM is dense, PG front yards are packed, and the cross roads have cars on both sides, so the carrier usually waits on a main road near the lake and the bike is ridden or wheeled out to it. An early start, before the shops open and the delivery traffic arrives, makes this quick.

Every BTM plan also starts with Silk Board. The junction sits on the layout's doorstep, and a loaded carrier caught there mid-morning goes nowhere for a long while. Collections are early for exactly that reason, whichever way the bike is going.

Once the bike is out on the road and before any wrapping, the crew photographs it. Show them the scratches you already know of. A bike that's lived in a BTM PG yard for a couple of years will have a few, and it's better they're on record.

Papers for the bike you own

For the bike you own, the crew carries a copy of its registration certificate and a copy of your ID. Where the RC shows a parent, as it often does for a bike that came with you from home, add a few lines from that parent, signed, agreeing to the move, and a copy of their ID card.

If you bought it second-hand here and the transfer into your name hasn't gone through yet, bring the sale receipt and the seller's signed form copies. It's worth finishing that transfer before the bike leaves Karnataka, as it's harder to complete from another state.

Check the insurance too. A bike bought second-hand sometimes still carries the previous owner's policy, and that's worth sorting before you ride it in a new city.

Keep the rental company's paperwork completely separate from your own bike's. Two RCs, two sets of keys and two insurance papers in one folder is how the wrong one ends up in the wrong hands.

Scooty shifting from BTM Layout

Scooters are the most common rental bike, so look at the name on the RC before you book. If it's a company's, the scooter goes back to them. If it's yours, it can travel like any other two-wheeler, and being lighter it's normally the cheaper of the two to send.

Plenty of BTM residents have one of each, a rented scooter for the daily office run and their own scooter that came from home and mostly sat in the PG yard. Keep their keys apart and label them. It sounds silly until the rental company collects the wrong one.

Before pickup, clear the seat box of your own scooter completely. Two years of PG life leaves a surprising amount in there, and anything you leave in a rental scooter's seat box you'll probably not see again.

If your own scooter has been standing in the yard for months while you rode the rental, check the tyres and the battery a few days before. It doesn't need to start for the move, but it's good to know.

Bike transport from BTM to other cities

A lot of the bikes leaving BTM are going home after a few years in the city, often to a Kerala town, Chennai or Hyderabad, all of which are well served. If home is somewhere small, the bike can sit a while until a carrier is headed that way, and you'll have that warning before you book.

Within Bangalore, to Koramangala, HSR, Jayanagar or the ORR, it's a same-day job once Silk Board is behind the carrier.

Fuel goes out of the tank before loading, so there's no point filling it at the end. We look at the bike free, usually on a video call from the PG yard, and the GST-inclusive price we put in writing is final. For a whole flat on the move, see the BTM Layout packers page.
