Bike Shifting in Kumaraswamy Layout

Kumaraswamy Layout isn't flat. The ground rises and falls between the stages, and some streets near the colleges are steep enough that you notice it on foot, let alone pushing a motorcycle. Most of the time that's just part of living here. On the day a bike goes on a carrier, it decides where the carrier can stand and how the bike gets to it.

A carrier loading bikes wants level ground. A bike being wheeled down a slope wants someone on the brakes. Neither is difficult, but both are worth planning, especially at semester end when half the student flats in the layout seem to be sending bikes home on the same weekend.

Why the slope matters

A carrier loads bikes up a ramp, and the ramp needs the vehicle to stand level and still. On a steep street that's not safe, for the bikes or the crew. So on the sloping roads here we agree a standing spot on a flatter stretch nearby, often at the bottom or top of the hill, or on a wider cross road where the ground evens out.

Our drivers know which roads in the layout are graded and which are steep. If you're not sure about your street, a quick video when you book settles it.

Rain makes all of this slower. A steep street that's fine on a dry morning gets slippery after a downpour, with water running down the gutter and leaves on the tarmac. If the forecast is bad, an early slot before the rain usually arrives is safer, and the crew will take the walk down at a slower pace either way.

The bike itself is either ridden to that spot, by you or one of the crew, or walked if it isn't running. Walking a heavy bike downhill is a two-person job, one steering and braking, one holding back from behind. Uphill, the same two people push. Neither is a problem as long as it's planned and nobody's in a hurry.

Parked on a slope at home

If your bike lives on a sloping driveway or the street outside, park it in gear on the last evening, if it's a geared motorcycle, and on its main stand if the ground allows. A bike on its side stand facing downhill has a way of rolling off it.

Leave it facing the way it'll be leaving, so the crew isn't trying to turn a heavy bike round on a slope. In most cases that means facing down the hill.

If the brakes have been feeling soft, tell us. On flat ground that's a minor point. On a slope it decides how the crew handles the bike, and it's worth getting looked at before you ride it again at the other end.

Semester end and student bikes

The colleges set the calendar in Kumaraswamy Layout, with Dayananda Sagar and its neighbours emptying and filling the student flats around the academic year. Semester end and the summer break bring a rush of students sending bikes home, and the weekends around exams fill up quickly. Book a week or two ahead if your dates are fixed by an exam timetable.

Many students ride bikes registered to a parent. That's fine for the trip, with a short signed note from the parent and a copy of their ID alongside the RC copy.

If you're coming back next semester, think about whether the bike needs to go home at all.

Flatmates leaving on the same weekend sometimes book together. Two or three bikes going to the same city can share a carrier, and one collection from the same street is simpler for everyone than three separate visits on a steep road.

For the rest, the decision is mostly about what happens next. Our warehouse and storage service can hold it over the break, which saves two long trips. If you're graduating and leaving for a job, it goes home or to the new city.

Scooty shifting from Kumaraswamy Layout

Scooters are light enough that a slope is much less of an issue. One person can walk a scooter down most streets here safely. On the carrier it gets the same treatment as any two-wheeler, pictures of its condition first, cushioning on the handlebar and mirrors, then wrap and straps to keep it upright. It usually costs a bit less than a motorcycle.

Student scooters tend to have a lot stuffed under the seat by the end of a year. Empty it all before pickup, including the spare keys of three different flats.

And if the scooter's brakes are soft or a tyre is low, mention it. On a slope it matters more than anywhere else.

Bike and two wheeler transport out of Kumaraswamy Layout

Local moves stay mostly in the south-west, Banashankari, Padmanabhanagar, ISRO Layout, Uttarahalli, Girinagar, and they're done the same day. For other cities, the Outer Ring Road and Kanakapura Road get the carrier onto the main corridors without crossing the centre. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala are regular runs. Hometowns off the main routes are slower to arrange, since we wait for a load heading there, and the quote will say so.

Students heading home should check the insurance has some life left, and that someone at home knows the delivery date.

Run the fuel low in the last week, since the tank is emptied before loading. We survey free, usually a short video of the bike and the street, and give one written price with GST. If a whole family flat is moving, the Kumaraswamy Layout packers page covers the household.
