Bike Shifting in Madiwala

Madiwala is PG country. Rooms above the market, rented floors behind Hosur Road, shared flats with four bikes parked outside. When someone here leaves Bangalore for good, the bike question comes up fast, and a lot of riders' first instinct is simply to ride it home. It's free, it's an adventure, and the bike's going there anyway.

Sometimes that's absolutely the right call. Sometimes it's a long day on a loaded bike through highway traffic with a deadline at the other end. Here's how to tell which, honestly, from someone who'd only earn something if you chose the carrier.

When riding home makes sense

If home is a few hours away, the bike is in good shape, you're an experienced rider and you aren't carrying much, riding is reasonable. Plenty of people from Madiwala ride to Hosur, Mysore or towns a morning away without any trouble, and it saves the cost of a carrier.

Do it properly, though. Service the bike first, check the tyres and brakes, leave at dawn, take breaks, and don't strap a suitcase to the pillion. Send the luggage separately.

Think about where you'll stop, too. A long ride on a commuter bike means fuel stops more often than you'd expect and a sore back by the afternoon. Plan the halts before you leave rather than hoping for a good dhaba when you need one.

Weather matters more on two wheels. Riding home in the monsoon, through ghat sections or across open highway in the summer afternoon heat, is a very different trip from the same road on a cool morning in December.

And start from Madiwala before the traffic does. Silk Board at nine in the morning is a bad start to any long ride.

When a carrier is the better choice

For a long distance, a full day or more on the road, the sums change. Hundreds of kilometres add wear to tyres, chain and engine, the odometer climbs, and the fuel and tolls and a night's stay can add up to a fair part of what a carrier costs. And the risk of a long highway ride on a commuter bike is real.

A carrier also makes sense if you need to arrive fresh for a joining date, if the bike is a scooter that's uncomfortable at highway speeds, if it isn't fully road-legal yet, or if you're flying or taking a train anyway. In those cases the bike follows on a committed date and you travel the way you'd rather.

There's also the question of what happens if something goes wrong halfway. A puncture or a breakdown on an unfamiliar stretch of highway, alone, with your luggage on the bike, is the scenario that makes people wish they'd sent it. On a carrier, that risk simply isn't yours.

Neither choice is wrong. It's distance, the bike, and how much you enjoy riding.

Getting the bike out of a Madiwala PG

In most Madiwala PGs the bikes stand shoulder to shoulder along the lane or squeezed under the stairs. Nobody can load off Hosur Road itself, so our vehicle stops on a service road or a quieter inner lane, at a spot we agree with you, and the crew brings the bike to it.

Bikes in a shared PG row often get knocked over or scratched by others parking at night. If yours has picked up a fresh scrape from a neighbour's handlebar, point it out at pickup so it's on the record before the journey, not discovered after.

The market side is busiest through the trading day, with traders' vans taking every bit of kerb. An early slot is the way round that, and it also gets the carrier away before the Silk Board queues.

Some riders split it. They ride the first part, to a friend's place in Hosur, say, and send the bike from there on a carrier for the long stretch. We can collect from anywhere on a route we run, not just from Madiwala.

If you've already left and a friend is handing the bike over, give them the key and an envelope with the papers, and give us their number.

Scooty shifting: rarely a ride for long distances

Scooters are where the ride-or-ship question is easiest. A gearless scooty is lovely for Madiwala's lanes and miserable for a long highway ride, small wheels, little wind protection, and a top speed that keeps you among the lorries. For anything beyond a few hours, most people send it.

Once it's on our vehicle a scooty is treated the same as a motorcycle, pictures taken, bars and mirrors cushioned, the body wrapped, straps keeping it on its wheels. Its lighter weight usually brings the price below a motorcycle's.

Bike and two wheeler transport from Madiwala

If the bike goes by carrier, it heads out early, past Silk Board before the office wave. Chennai, Hyderabad and the Kerala cities are routine runs from Bangalore. A small or remote town gets fewer vehicles, which we'd flag at the start.

The arrival day is agreed before loading, so you can plan around it. The tank is drained for the journey, so if you were going to ride it partway, don't. In the bike's envelope go photocopies of the RC and the owner's ID, and a note from the owner if it isn't you.

You'll get a firm figure on paper with GST before you decide, so you can put it next to your own estimate for riding. For a PG room or flat shift as well, see the Madiwala packers page.

FAQ

Bike and Scooty Shifting in Madiwala, answered

Our price depends on the route and the bike, and you get it in writing. Compare it with fuel, tolls, a night's stay and the wear a long ride puts on the bike.

A few hours on a well-kept bike, riding is fine. A full day or more, or on a scooter, a carrier usually makes more sense.

Possible, but tiring and exposed over long distances. Most people send a scooty for anything beyond a few hours.

Yes. The vehicle stops on a service road or inner lane and the crew brings the bike out.

Yes. Give them the key and papers, and give us their number.

Yes. The carrier leaves early, past Silk Board, and the arrival day is agreed before loading.

Yes, though vehicles to smaller towns run less often. We'll say so when we quote.

It adds wear to tyres, chain and engine and puts kilometres on the odometer. Whether that matters depends on the bike.

Early, before the market vans and the Silk Board traffic.

Yes, on the same booking and invoice.

Yes. We can collect from a friend's place further down the route instead of from Madiwala.

It's harder and riskier, especially on ghat roads. In heavy rain a carrier is the calmer choice.
