Bike Shifting in Banashankari

In the older stages of Banashankari the two-wheeler in the porch has often been there longer than anything else in the house. It's the scooter a father rode to the office for twenty years, or the one a mother still takes to the market on Sunday, and when the house is being sold or the parents are moving into a flat, somebody has to decide where it goes. Quite often the answer is a son or daughter in another city who wants it, and that's the kind of bike move we do most around here.

It isn't a difficult job, but it's an emotional one, and it has a couple of practical wrinkles. The scooter is usually registered to a parent, not to the person receiving it. And it's parked behind a grille gate that was built for exactly one scooter and a pair of chappals, on a lane where a carrier will struggle to stop. Both are easy to deal with if they're talked about before the day.

The family scooter, and who it's going to

Most of the Banashankari bikes we collect aren't being moved by their riders. A parent has stopped riding, or is moving somewhere smaller with no parking, and the scooter is going to a child in Chennai, Mysore or further. The person booking is usually that child, on the phone from wherever they live now, while an elderly parent is the one who'll be standing at the gate.

So we plan it around the parent. The crew calls ahead so nobody is surprised by a knock, they don't need anyone to lift or push anything, and the photographs of the scooter's condition get sent to whoever booked as well as being shown to whoever's at home. If there's a neighbour or a relative who'd rather handle the handover, that's fine too, just give us their name and number.

One question worth settling early. Does the scooter go now, or after the house move? Some families want it gone first so it isn't in the way on moving day, others want it to follow the parents. Either works. Just decide before we quote, because it changes the date we commit to.

Out through the grille gate and onto the road

The older houses here have compound walls, a narrow gate and very often a step or two between the porch and the street. A scooter that has lived in that porch for years may also have a flat tyre or a battery that gave up long ago, which is perfectly fine, it just needs to be mentioned so the crew comes with enough hands to roll it out gently.

The carrier itself almost never comes to the gate. The inner lanes in the older stages barely take a tempo, so it stands on the nearest cross street or main road that has room, and the scooter is wheeled out to it. We agree that point with you before the day.

Mornings suit this part of the city. Before half past eight the temple junction and the Kathriguppe main road are easy, after that a carrier spends more time at signals than on the road, and so we prefer the early slot when the bike is leaving Banashankari for good.

Old scooter shifting and the paperwork that comes with it

Here's the bit people trip on. The RC is almost always in the parent's name. That doesn't stop the scooter travelling, but it does mean it shouldn't travel with only the receiver's ID. Put a copy of the RC in the folder, a copy of the parent's ID, and a short signed letter from the parent saying the scooter is being sent to their son or daughter at the new address. That's enough for the journey.

Changing the owner's name on the RC, or registering the scooter in another state later, is something the family does with the RTO, it isn't part of the move. We'll tell you what to carry for the trip and the rest is between you and the transport office.

If it's a geared scooter from another decade, or anything you'd describe as a classic, say so when you book. Older machines get more padding at the panels and the straps are placed where they won't mark paint that can't be matched any more. A modern gearless scooty gets the same wrap and strapping and, being lighter, usually costs a bit less than a motorcycle going the same way.

Bike and two wheeler transport from Banashankari to another city

Banashankari is well placed for leaving. Kanakapura Road and the NICE Road get a carrier onto the Mysore side and the southern routes without going through the centre of the city, and Chennai and the Kerala routes run often enough that a scooter isn't kept waiting for a vehicle.

Smaller towns take longer to fill a carrier and we'll tell you so honestly at the quote. Whatever the destination, the delivery date is committed before loading, the scooter is photographed before it's wrapped and again when it's handed over, and the price is one written figure on GST after a free survey on video or at the house.

For a scooter that matters more to the family than its resale value, transit insurance is worth asking about. It's optional and it's priced on the value you declare.

If the house is moving into a flat

When the scooter is part of a bigger downsizing, it can go on the same vehicle as the household and on the same quote, or wait in storage while the family decides who's having it. Our Banashankari packers page covers the house side of that move.

FAQ

Bike and Scooty Shifting in Banashankari, answered

The destination drives most of it. Mysore and Chennai are regular runs and cost less than a small town further off. A gearless scooty usually comes in a little under a motorcycle on the same route. We quote one firm price in writing after a free survey.

Yes. Carry a copy of the RC, a copy of his ID and a short signed letter from him saying the scooter is coming to you. Changing the name on the RC is done later, by you, with the RTO.

Yes, modern scooties are most of what we move in the newer stages and the apartment side. They're wrapped and strapped like any other bike.

Only open the gate and hand over the key and papers. The crew brings the scooter out, wraps it and loads it, and the condition photos go to whoever booked as well.

It can. It doesn't need to run to be loaded, just to roll. Tell us at booking so the crew comes ready to push it out of the porch.

Usually not, the inner lanes are too tight to stop in. It waits on the nearest wider road and the scooter is wheeled out to it. We agree the spot with you in advance.

Both are regular routes. From Banashankari the carrier heads out by Kanakapura Road or the NICE Road rather than through the city, and the delivery date is fixed before loading.

If someone is happy to ride it across to Jayanagar or JP Nagar, riding it is fine. When nobody in the family rides any more, or the scooter hasn't been on the road for a while, a carrier is the simpler answer.

Yes. If the house is being emptied before the family has decided, the scooter can go into storage and come out when there's an address for it.

It's optional and priced on the value you declare. For a scooter with more sentimental than market value, a lot of families decide it's worth it.
