Send a location pin from the exact spot where you want the bike collected, taken while standing there. A pin dropped from memory at home is often a hundred metres out, which in a maze of lanes can mean a different street entirely.

Add a landmark the locals use. A temple, a school, a bus stop, a well-known shop or a water tank on a tower. Drivers here navigate by landmarks far more than by street numbers, and a crew that knows to turn left after the temple arrives on time.

Give us two phone numbers. If the crew gets lost, they'll call, and a phone that's on silent while you're packing is the commonest reason for delay.

On the morning, it helps to stand at the end of the lane, or send someone, when the crew says it's ten minutes away. A familiar face waving at the corner is worth more than any map.

If you've just moved here yourself and don't know the landmarks yet, ask a neighbour or the shop at the corner what people call the place. The name a delivery driver will recognise is often not the one on your rental agreement.

Choosing the meeting point

Many of Doddakammanahalli's older lanes are too narrow for a carrier to enter, let alone turn around. The newer layouts have wider roads, but some are still unfinished, and soft ground after rain is a real problem for a heavy vehicle.

So the carrier usually waits somewhere firm and open: the main road towards Gottigere, the entrance of a layout, or a wide junction. The bike is ridden or wheeled there. If you're not confident riding to the meeting point, the crew will do it.

Pick that spot with us at booking. Tell us how wide your lane is and whether there's anywhere for a long vehicle to stop without blocking traffic. A short video of the lane is ideal.

Avoid school opening and closing times if you're near one. Buses and parents' scooters fill the junctions, and a carrier stopped in the middle of that is not popular.

If your layout has a security cabin at the entrance, tell the guard the evening before that a bike is leaving on a truck in the morning. Guards at newer layouts often stop unfamiliar goods vehicles, and a quick word the night before keeps the carrier from waiting at the barrier.

When the meeting point is a few hundred metres away, wheel or ride the bike there a little before the crew arrives. Waiting at the spot with the bike, the key and the envelope in hand makes the whole collection quick.

On the pickup morning

Once you've met, the crew looks over the bike and photographs it from every side before any wrapping starts. Stand with them and point out the marks you already know about, so they're in the record.

Then comes the wrapping and padding, and the bike goes up onto the carrier, where it's strapped upright. You'll get copies of the photos, and you should forward them to whoever is receiving it.

Bring the paperwork to the meeting point in one envelope: RC photocopy, owner's ID photocopy, and the owner's signed go-ahead when it's a relative's bike. Keep the originals at home.

Run the tank close to empty in the days before. What's left gets drained before the bike goes up, and an empty tank on a carrier is safer for everyone.

After the carrier leaves, keep your phone close for the rest of the day. If the crew has a question about the bike or the papers, they'll call you, and a quick answer keeps the bike moving towards its destination.

Scooty shifting from Doddakammanahalli

In many Doddakammanahalli homes the scooter does the daily work: school drop, the market, the trip out to Bannerghatta Road. It goes up on the truck with the same padding and straps as any motorbike, for a little less money.

Riding a scooter down a rough lane to the meeting point is easier than riding a heavy motorcycle, so scooter pickups here tend to be quick. Clear the seat box first and take off any loose accessories.

If a family member is riding it to the meeting point for you, give them the papers envelope too, so everything arrives together.

Take the scooter's mirror off if it's loose. Rough lanes have a way of finishing off a mirror that was already wobbling.
