When they move on, the move itself is often just a bag and a bike. There's no household to pack, no furniture, no lorry. That makes the bike the only real job, and the PG's rules about parking and departures decide how smoothly it goes.

Telling the PG owner

Most PG owners want notice before you leave, and many hold a deposit against it. Give your notice in writing, ask when the deposit comes back, and mention that your bike will be collected by a carrier on a particular date.

That last part matters. Some owners are protective of their parking area, and a crew turning up to take a bike from a compound the owner didn't know about can look suspicious. A message the day before saves an argument at the gate.

If your room has to be vacated before the bike can be collected, ask whether the bike can stay in the parking for a day or two after you've left. Most owners say yes if you ask nicely and in advance.

Settle the electricity share and any small dues before pickup day. A PG owner with an outstanding bill has been known to hold on to the one valuable item still in the compound.

If you're leaving on short notice because a new job starts quickly, say so at booking. A single bike from a PG is a small job, and an early-morning slot can often be found sooner than people expect, though it depends on the day.

Return the PG's gate remote or key fob, if you were given one, after the bike is out. Handing it back the night before leaves you unable to open the gate for the crew.

Getting the bike out of PG parking

PG parking is usually a cramped ground floor or a strip in front of the building, with bikes squeezed in side by side, sometimes three deep. On the morning, yours might be at the back.

Move it to the front the night before. If that means shuffling other residents' bikes, ask them, or ask the caretaker to help. Moving other people's bikes without asking is a quick way to make enemies on your last day.

Konappana Agrahara's lanes are narrow and busy. A carrier usually waits on the nearest wider road while the bike is ridden out, which takes a few minutes.

The crew photographs the bike before wrapping. Stand with them, point out the marks you know about, and keep copies of the pictures for whoever receives it.

If the PG has CCTV over the parking, tell the caretaker the crew's arrival time. A footage check by a suspicious owner, after a truck has taken a bike away at dawn, is easily avoided with a message.

When the bike is wedged behind a car that belongs to the PG owner, ask for the car keys or for the owner to move it the evening before. Owners' cars seem to be the ones parked worst.

Travelling light

Since there's no household move, you can travel however suits you: by train, bus or flight, with the bike following by road. Plan your arrival so you're at the other end before, or soon after, the bike.

Carry the important things yourself: original RC, insurance, your ID and the bike's spare key. The bike travels with photocopies only.

If your bag is too much to carry on the train, a courier is often cheaper than you'd think for one or two cartons. Don't try to strap a bag to the bike for the journey; it won't be accepted.

Your helmet goes in your luggage. Strapped to a bike on a carrier, it can be crushed, and a lost helmet means riding nowhere when the bike arrives.

If you're sharing a cab to the station with a PG friend, time the bike pickup well before you leave. A rushed handover with one eye on the clock is when things get missed.

Scooty shifting from Konappana Agrahara

Scooters are everywhere in this neighbourhood's PGs, used for the short trip to the campus, the shops and the late food run. They travel on the carrier exactly as motorcycles do, padded and strapped upright, and usually cost a little less.

Clear the seat box. PG scooters tend to hold an ID card holder, a raincoat, earphones, a phone mount and a spare charger.

If the scooter's registration is in a parent's name, which is common for younger residents, add the parent's signed note and a copy of their ID to the envelope.

Check the tyres and brakes before you hand it over if you can. A scooter that's been ridden hard for a year of office runs often needs a little attention, and it's useful for the receiver to know what's what.

If you're selling the scooter to a PG-mate instead of sending it, finish the paperwork before you leave. Selling in person, in the same building, is the easiest sale you'll ever make, and it saves the transport entirely.

Bike transport from Konappana Agrahara to other cities

A single PG floor here can hold people from six states, so bikes leave in every direction. Metro cities north and south are easy to schedule. A hometown far from a highway might wait for a truck heading its way. Either way, you'll know the arrival date before you hand over the key.

Leave the tank nearly dry before pickup. Our survey is free, often just a quick video of the bike in the PG parking, and the price is written down with GST before you agree. If you have more than a bag after all, our Electronic City Phase 1 packers page covers a small room move too.
