Bike Shifting in Domlur

Domlur sits close to a lot of offices and consulates, and a fair number of the people renting here are on postings that end with another posting, often abroad. When that happens, the household splits into what flies, what sails, and what stays behind in storage. The bike almost always lands in the third pile, because nobody ships a commuter motorcycle to Singapore.

The question is whether to sell it or keep it. If you expect to be back in Bangalore in a couple of years, storing it here can make more sense than selling now and buying again later. We collect it, store it wrapped, and bring it out to wherever you're living when you return.

Storing a bike while you're abroad

The bike is photographed from every side before anything is done to it, so there's a clear record of the condition it went in with. Then it's wrapped and stored. It isn't ridden, started or lent to anyone while it's with us. When you're back, it comes out, a second set of photos is taken at delivery, and you can compare the two.

Storage is billed for the time the bike is held, and that's set out on the quote alongside the collection and the eventual delivery. Tell us roughly how long you expect to be away. It doesn't have to be exact, and it can be extended.

People often ask whether a friend could just keep the bike instead. Sometimes that works well. But a bike in a friend's basement for two years tends to get borrowed, moved around by security, rained on and forgotten about, and the friend ends up responsible for something they didn't really sign up for. Storage takes that off everyone.

If your plans change and you'd rather the bike went to family in another city while you're away, that's a delivery we can do from storage at any point.

Getting the bike ready for a long sleep

A bike that's going to stand for a year or more needs a little preparation that a bike being moved across town doesn't. Run the tank as low as you can, since fuel is drained before it goes on a vehicle anyway and stale petrol does an engine no favours. Ask a mechanic to disconnect the battery, or do it yourself if you're used to it, so it isn't flat when you return.

Give it a wash before collection, so the photos show the paint rather than months of Domlur dust. Leave the cover with the bike if you have one.

Take off anything that clips on, a phone mount, a tank bag, a GPS unit, and keep them with your other stored things or take them with you. Small accessories are the first things to go missing over a long period, wherever a bike is kept.

Expect it to need a proper service when it comes out, tyres, brakes, oil and a battery check. That's normal for any bike that's been standing, however well it was stored.

The paperwork while you're away

This is the part people forget. A bike in storage still has an RC and an insurance policy, and both carry on in the background. Decide before you leave whether to keep the motor insurance running or let it lapse and renew on return, and check the renewal rules with your insurer. Note when the pollution certificate expires, so you can get a fresh one before the first ride back.

Leave copies of the RC and your ID with us for the bike's file, and keep the originals somewhere safe, with family if you're not taking them abroad. If someone else will collect the bike or receive it on your behalf, give us their name in writing.

It's also worth leaving someone in India with authority to act for you on the bike, a sibling or a parent, in case anything comes up while you're away. A short signed letter naming them, kept with us and with them, is usually enough.

And if the bike has a loan on it, tell your lender you're going abroad. That's between you and them, but it's better raised now than from overseas.

Scooter shifting into storage

Scooters store just as well as motorcycles, and because they're smaller they take less space, which keeps storage a bit cheaper. A scooty is photographed, padded at the mirrors and handlebar, wrapped and kept upright on its stand.

Empty the boot completely before collection. Anything left in a stored scooter for a year comes out smelling of a stored scooter.

Bike and two wheeler transport from Domlur, now or later

Collection from Domlur is planned around the flyover and the ORR, which choke at the office peaks, and around parking on the tighter layout streets. An early slot gets the carrier in and out before the worst of it. In the apartment projects, Embassy Manor, Mittal Auriga and others, the bike comes up from the basement and the facility desk should be told a day ahead.

On your return, delivery can be anywhere, Domlur, another part of Bangalore, or another city if you've been posted elsewhere in India. Chennai, Hyderabad and the Kerala routes run regularly from Bangalore, smaller towns less often.

Price for the whole thing, collection, storage and delivery, comes after a free survey and in writing with GST. If you're also splitting a household three ways, the Domlur packers page covers the international side of the move.

FAQ

Bike and Scooty Shifting in Domlur, answered

It depends on how long it's stored, plus collection from Domlur and the eventual delivery. All of it is set out on one written quote after a free survey.

If you expect to come back to Bangalore within a couple of years, storing often makes more sense than selling and rebuying. For a long or open-ended posting, selling may be simpler.

No. It isn't ridden, started or lent. It's photographed at collection and again at delivery.

Run the tank low, have the battery disconnected, wash it, and leave the cover with it.

That's your decision with your insurer. Check whether letting it lapse affects renewal before you leave.

Yes, anywhere in Bangalore or to another city if your next posting is elsewhere in India.

Yes. Scooters store well and take less space, so storage costs a little less.

Yes, with your written permission naming them. We can also deliver it to them in another city.

Sending a vehicle overseas comes with customs rules of its own and isn't what this page covers. Raise it when we survey the international move and we'll tell you what's possible.

It may need a battery charge and a service, which is normal after long storage. Plan a mechanic visit soon after delivery.

Yes. If your next posting is in another Indian city, the bike can go straight there from storage on a delivery date we fix before loading.

They can, but over a long posting bikes in friends' basements tend to get borrowed and forgotten. Storage avoids that.
