Bike Shifting in Doddanekundi

Doddanekundi has a lot of nearly new bikes. People working the ORR offices buy a decent motorcycle or a smart scooter in their first year, park it in a tower basement, and a year or two later it's moving to another city with them. With a bike that new, the question people ask isn't whether it'll arrive. It's what happens if it arrives with a scratch.

That's a reasonable thing to want answered before you hand over the keys. So here's how the condition record works, what transit insurance is and isn't, and how declared value fits in, without the small print.

The pickup photos are your baseline

Before anything goes on the bike, the crew photographs it from every side, the tank, the panels, the mirrors, the lights, any existing marks. You see those photos and get copies. At delivery the same check is done before you sign, so both of you are comparing the bike against a record, not against memory.

The photos also cover the things people forget to look at. The odometer reading, the state of the tyres, whether the indicators and brake light work, any warning lights on the dash with the key turned. A bike that arrives with a dead indicator is a dispute only if nobody knew whether it worked before.

Look at the photos when they're taken. If you know about a scuff on the exhaust or a chip on the fairing, point it out so it's noted. It protects you as much as it protects us, a mark that's recorded at pickup can't be argued about later in either direction.

A clean bike helps. Dust from basement parking hides small marks, so a quick wipe the night before makes the record more useful.

Transit insurance and declared value

Transit insurance is optional. If you take it, it's priced on the value you declare for the bike, so the higher the value, the higher the premium. It's there for the rare case where something goes properly wrong on the road.

Declare a fair value, roughly what the bike would cost to replace in its current condition. Declaring far below that to save a little on the premium means any claim is limited to that lower figure, and declaring far above it just costs more without helping.

It's also worth being clear about what transit insurance isn't. It isn't your bike's own motor insurance, which you still need for riding it, and which shouldn't lapse just because the bike is on a vehicle for a few days. Keep that policy running, and check its renewal date doesn't fall in the middle of the move.

Some employers who pay for a relocation want transit insurance as a condition. If yours is covering the move, check the policy before you decide.

If you spot something at delivery

Check the bike before you sign for it. Walk around it with the pickup photos on your phone. If there's a mark that wasn't there before, say so right then, photograph it, and make sure it's written on the delivery note. Raising it later, after the crew has left and the bike has been ridden, is much harder for everyone.

Small marks and real damage are different conversations. A rub on the wrap that polishes out is one thing, a cracked panel is another, and the photos make it clear which you're looking at. Either way, the time to raise it is before the crew has driven away.

If the bike is new enough to still be under the dealer's warranty, keep the service booklet with you rather than in the boot. Should anything need looking at after the move, the dealer at the other end will want to see it.

Then ring us. If insurance was taken, the claim starts from those two sets of photos and the note. If it wasn't, we'll still talk it through honestly. The reason the record exists is so these conversations are short.

Scooter shifting for a new scooter

Newer scooters have a lot of glossy plastic, and that's exactly where small scratches show. They're padded at the apron, the mirrors and the handlebar, wrapped in layers and strapped upright on their own, the same as a motorcycle. A scooter usually costs slightly less to move because it's lighter and smaller.

Empty the boot before pickup, and leave the original key with yourself. Hand over the one you use day to day.

Bike and two wheeler transport from Doddanekundi

Doddanekundi sits off the ORR beside Marathahalli and Mahadevapura, so a carrier leaving for Chennai or Hyderabad reaches Old Madras Road and the Hoskote highway quickly once it's past the morning rush. Kerala routes run often too. If home is a smaller place, we'd flag at the start that carriers there leave less often.

In the towers here, Adarsh Vista, Akme Ballet, Bren Avalon and others, the crew rides or walks it up the ramp to where the vehicle is parked outside, and associations generally want security told a day ahead. Pick an early slot. The ORR through Marathahalli is slow from mid-morning.

The tank gets emptied before loading, so run it low. A photocopy of the RC and your ID travel with the bike. You'll have the price, in writing and including GST, from a free survey, and the household side of a Doddanekundi move is on our packers page if you need it.
