Plan the two dates together

Start with the question nobody asks until it's too late, usually on the evening before the trucks arrive. Which one do you need first in the new city? For most families it's the car, because that's what gets the children to school and the shopping home. For a working parent who commutes on two wheels, it may be the bike.

Once you know, book both at the same time. Tell us the order you want them to arrive in and we'll set the bike's delivery date around the car's, whether the car is with us or arranged separately.

Some families drive the car themselves to the new city and send everything else. That works well, and the bike can arrive within the same week. If you're driving, ask a friend or neighbour in Konanakunte to hand over the bike after you've left.

The same thinking applies within Bangalore. If you're moving across the city, one of you may drive the car while the bike goes on the carrier, or the other way round.

Different vehicles, different rules

A bike goes on a two-wheeler carrier, wrapped, padded and strapped upright alongside other bikes. A car is moved by car transport, which is a separate service with its own vehicles and its own page on this site. Don't expect them to travel on the same truck.

Both have their fuel brought down before loading, and both need copies of the registration and the owner's ID. If either is registered to someone other than the person sending it, add a signed note from the owner.

Insurance is separate too. The car's own policy and the bike's own policy should both be current, and transit insurance for each is optional and priced on its declared value.

The condition records are separate as well. Each vehicle is photographed on its own at pickup, and each set of pictures is what you check against at delivery.

Konanakunte is still filling in. On the finished layout roads there's room around the houses, and a carrier pulls up outside with no fuss. Other approaches are still half-built or rutted after the rains, and on those the bike is ridden out to meet the carrier on the nearest solid stretch.

With a car in the driveway, think about the order on the morning. If the car is leaving first, the bike's way out is clear. If the bike is collected first, make sure the car isn't blocking it in.

It's a long way in from here to the centre, so collections are early, often before the first school buses are out on the layout roads. For trips south and towards Mysuru, the Kanakapura Road and NICE Road side gets the carrier onto the highway without crossing the city.

Scooty shifting alongside the family car

In many Konanakunte homes the two-wheeler is a scooter, used for the short trips the car isn't worth taking out for, the milk, the tuition class, the bank. It travels like any bike, photographed, padded at the handlebar and mirrors, wrapped in layers and strapped upright, and it usually costs a little less than a motorcycle.

If there are two two-wheelers and a car, the two bikes can share a carrier if they're going to the same place. Ask for both in one quote. A family with three vehicles going to one city is common enough out here, and planning all three on one call saves a lot of back and forth.

Clear out the seat box before pickup and take off any phone holder or hook. Keep the spare key with the car keys, so all the spares are in one place in the new house.

And think about who'll ride the scooter at the other end. If it's going to be a different family member for a while, check the insurance covers them before anyone takes it out.

Chennai and Hyderabad see carriers going all the time, Kerala is a regular route and Mysuru is a short run from this side. A smaller town may take longer to find a vehicle heading there, and we'll say so at the quote. The delivery date is fixed before loading.

Within Bangalore, to Uttarahalli, Vajarahalli or across to JP Nagar, it's a same-day job.

If the car is going to the same new city by road with you driving, the bike arrives on its own agreed date, and someone at the new address can receive it if you're still on the highway or settling in elsewhere. Give us their name and number, and pass them the pickup photos so they know what they're checking.

Once both vehicles are there, look each one over properly before you sign for it. It's easy to rush the second one when you've just spent an hour on the first.
