Bike Shifting in Haralur

A surprising number of the bikes parked in Haralur's tower basements aren't registered to the person who rides them. They were bought back home, in a father's or mother's name, and came to Bangalore with the son or daughter who got the job here. Nobody gives it a thought for years, until the bike has to move.

It isn't a problem. It just means one more piece of paper. The owner on the RC needs to say, in writing, that the bike can travel, and we need a copy of their ID alongside yours. Sort that out on a phone call home and the rest of the move goes like any other.

Why the name on the RC matters

When a bike goes onto a carrier, the papers in its envelope need to tell one consistent story about who owns it and who agreed to send it. If the RC is in your name, a copy of it and a copy of your ID do the job. If it's in a parent's name, those two documents describe two different people, and anyone checking the load will reasonably ask why.

So we ask for a short letter from the registered owner. It doesn't need a lawyer or a stamp. A few plain lines, signed, saying the bike with this registration number belongs to them, that you're allowed to send it, and where it's going. Add a copy of their ID card and the folder tells the whole story without anyone needing to phone your mother from a checkpoint.

Parents are usually happy to write it, and some like to add their phone number at the bottom, which does no harm. The awkward part is the timing, because the letter has to be signed and sent to you, and that's easy to leave until the night before. Ask the week you book, a photo of the signed letter on your phone is fine for the crew as long as you have a printout too.

Transferring it into your name, if you want to

Some people use the move as the push to get the bike transferred into their own name. That's a sensible thing to do eventually, but it's a separate process with the transport department, and it isn't something we handle or can speed up. Don't let it hold up the move.

If you do start a transfer, try not to be halfway through it on the day the bike travels. A bike with an application pending and the old RC in the folder is fine. What causes confusion is a set of papers where nobody can tell which name is current.

One related check. If the bike was bought on a loan in your parent's name, look at the RC for a bank's name. If the loan is long paid but the RC still shows it, that's worth clearing too, though again it doesn't stop the bike moving.

Getting the bike out onto Haralur Road

Most Haralur towers open almost straight onto Haralur Road or a lane just off it, and that's a busy road from early morning. A carrier stood at a gate there holds up everyone behind it, so we aim for the first slot of the day, before about nine. Later than that, someone's leaning on a horn before the bike is even strapped.

Carriers don't go down into basements, so you bring the bike up the ramp, or one of the crew does, and it's photographed all round at the top before any wrap goes on. If your building has a separate goods entrance, tell us, it's often the easier place to load.

The society may want to see paperwork before letting a bike leave on someone else's vehicle. Show them the same folder, your ID, the RC copy and the owner's letter, and it's quickly settled. A guard who sees a different surname on the RC is only doing their job by asking, so it helps to have the explanation on paper rather than in a hurried phone call.

Scooty shifting when it's Mum's scooter

Plenty of the scooters here are the same story, bought by a parent and passed on. A scooty moves with the same folder as a motorcycle, and on the carrier it's cushioned at the bars and mirrors, wrapped and kept standing with straps. Being light, it's usually the cheaper of the two to send.

If the scooter is going back to the parent who owns it, the letter is even simpler. They're sending it to themselves, more or less, and they should be there, or someone they trust should be, to receive it at the other end.

Bike and two wheeler transport home, or to a new city

The bikes registered to parents are very often the ones heading home, back to the town they were bought in. Chennai and Hyderabad have frequent carriers, the Kerala routes are regular and somewhere smaller can mean waiting for a vehicle headed in that direction. We'll tell you which when we quote, and you'll have the delivery date before the bike is tied down.

Inside Bangalore it's a same-day job. A move to HSR, Kasavanahalli or further along Sarjapur Road is short once the timing's right.

Keep the tank low, it's emptied before the bike is loaded. A free survey, on a video call or in person, gets you a price in writing with the GST shown. And if the whole flat is going too, the Haralur packers page has the household side covered.

FAQ

The destination drives the price. The paperwork doesn't add anything. We give one written figure, GST included, after a free survey.

Yes. Add a short signed letter from him saying you can send it, plus a copy of his ID.

No. A plain signed letter naming the bike, the owner and the destination is enough for the move.

Keep the photo on your phone, but bring a printout too. The crew needs a paper copy in the folder.

No, that's a process with the transport department and you'd handle it yourself. It doesn't need to happen before the move.

Yes, with the same letter and ID copy. If it's going back to her, she or someone she trusts receives it.

Show the same folder, your ID, the RC copy and the owner's letter. That's usually all they need.

Yes. Bigger cities have frequent carriers, smaller towns can take longer to find a vehicle and we'll tell you when we quote.

At the gate or the visitor bay, early, before Haralur Road gets busy. A goods entrance is even better if your building has one.

No. A copy travels with the bike and you keep the original.

A signed scan sent by email or on your phone works, printed out for the folder. Plan it a few days ahead.
