A condition record worth having

Every car we move is photographed at pickup and at delivery, and the odometer is noted both times. For a premium car we go slower and closer. Each panel, each wheel and tyre, the bumpers and their lower edges, the mirrors, the glass, and any mark you already know about, close up.

Walk round with the crew while they do it, and take your time. Owners of cars like these usually know every chip by heart, and pointing them out now means they're on record before the car goes anywhere.

Take your own set too, in good light, the evening before, ideally parked somewhere you can walk all the way round it rather than squeezed against a wall in the basement. A short video walking round the car with the date showing is a second record that doesn't depend on anyone else.

At delivery, the same check runs the other way. Compare carefully before you sign, and if anything is different, note it on the delivery papers there and then.

Insurance on the real value

Your car's own motor policy covers it on the road. Transit insurance with us is separate, optional, and priced on the value you declare for the car. For an expensive car, it's the part people most regret skipping.

Declare the value honestly. Under-declaring to save on the premium leaves you under-covered if anything goes wrong, which is the one situation insurance exists for.

Ask us at the survey what the cover costs on your declared value, so you can decide with the number in front of you rather than a guess.

Keep your own policy current as well. You'll want to drive the car the day it arrives, and a lapsed policy stops that.

If the car is financed, check whether your lender has any conditions about it being moved to another state. Most don't object, but some want to be told, and it's better to ask than to find out when you try to change the address on the loan.

And if the car is a classic or collector's piece with an agreed-value policy, talk to your insurer before the move as well. Specialist policies sometimes have their own rules about transport.

Loading on Indiranagar's streets

Parking in Indiranagar is the defining problem, and it's sharper still for a long vehicle. Around 100 Feet Road and 12th Main there is almost nowhere a car carrier can stand once the shops and restaurants are open, and metro pillars sit in some of the obvious places.

So the plan starts with the loading point. On the quieter residential stages a carrier can sometimes stand outside the gate early in the morning, if the trees and cables allow. Otherwise we agree a wider road close by, and one of our team takes the car there.

For a car with low ground clearance, the ramp angle matters. Tell us the make and model at booking, and anything that's been changed, lowered suspension, a front splitter, aftermarket wheels. The crew will plan the loading so nothing scrapes.

Early is the rule, and on a Sunday it's earlier still, before the brunch crowd arrives on 12th Main. Before the cafes and offices open, the streets are calm and the loading takes the time it needs without a queue forming behind it.

Preparing a premium car

Bring the fuel down to a low level, take everything out of the cabin and the boot, and lock it. That includes the parking remote for your building, any documents in the glovebox, and the boot organiser full of things you'll want in the new city.

Fold the mirrors if they fold electrically, and retract any aerial. If the car has an alarm that reacts to movement or tilt, tell us how to set it, or switch the sensor off, so it isn't sounding for the whole journey.

Keep both keys with you if the car has two, and hand one to the crew on the morning itself. The spare stays at home.

Some owners of high-value cars prefer a dedicated carrier, one that leaves on their date with their car alone or with very few others. It costs more than a shared space, and for some cars it's worth it. We'll quote both if you ask.
