Choosing a spot with room above

At the survey, we look up as well as along the street. A stretch outside your gate might be wide enough, with no parking problems, and still be under a canopy too low for a loaded carrier, or crossed by a sagging cable that would catch.

Usually there's a better spot nearby. The end of the block where the trees thin out, a wider cross road, a stretch where the cables run high or along the other side. Our drivers know a lot of these blocks already, and a short video from you of the street, pointed upwards as well as along, helps us decide.

Once the spot is chosen, the car is driven there from your gate, by you or by one of our team. It's rarely more than a few minutes, and you're welcome to ride along and watch it go up the ramps.

If the car doesn't run, tell us at booking. A non-runner is winched aboard, and that has to happen where the carrier stands, so the spot needs to be reachable by pushing or by a single-car trailer.

During the monsoon, branches hang lower when they're wet and heavy, and the odd one comes down. If your move falls in the rains, the survey will be extra careful about overhead clearance.

On-street parking, both sides

Jayanagar's roads are wide, but by mid-morning many have cars parked along both sides, and a long vehicle stopping in the middle blocks everyone. Early mornings are when the streets are clear enough for a carrier to stand and load without causing a queue.

If your neighbours park in front of your gate, a word the evening before helps, and most are happy to oblige for one morning. A carrier standing outside for a short while early is barely noticed. The same carrier at ten is a traffic problem.

The 4th Block market and the commercial stretches fill earliest. If you're near them, the loading spot is likely to be on a quieter residential road.

The metro's Green Line runs along the edge of the area, and around the stations the roads are busier than the residential blocks behind them. That's another reason the spot is chosen carefully.

Cars from Jayanagar's older households

Many Jayanagar households have been in the same house for decades, and some of the cars are nearly as settled.

Plenty of those houses are now being rebuilt into builder floors, and a car sometimes has to leave because the portico is about to become a construction site. If that's your situation, the car can go to a relative, into a short move across the city, or wherever the family is staying during the work. Tell us the timing and we'll fit around the builder's schedule.

The cars that stay in the family for that long tend to be cared for, too. A well-kept older saloon that only goes out for weddings, a car that belonged to a parent, or a second car that's been parked for a long time.

The car is photographed on every side, with the odometer noted, before it's loaded, and again at delivery. On an older car, those photos are worth having. Point out the marks you know about.

If it's been standing a while, check the battery, the tyres and whether the handbrake has stuck. It doesn't need to start, but we need to know if it won't.

If it's going to a son or daughter in another city, a signed letter from the registered owner and copies of the RC and their ID travel with it.

Preparing the car

Bring the fuel down to the last quarter. Clear the cabin and the boot, including the documents in the glovebox, and lock the car. Hand one key to the crew and keep the spare at home.

Fold the mirrors and take off anything on the roof, a carrier, a box or a rack. On a tall carrier under Jayanagar's trees, a roof box is the first thing to meet a low branch. Mention a sensitive alarm, a low front bumper or anything unusual about the car.

Originals of the registration, policy and pollution slip remain with you, and if anyone will drive the car the day it arrives, make sure the policy hasn't lapsed.

If the car has been under a tree in your compound for a while, sap and bird droppings may have marked the paint. Wash it before the day, so the condition photos show the paint as it is rather than the grime on top.

Cars leave Jayanagar for Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi NCR and smaller cities, and the Ring Road gets a carrier onto the main routes without much trouble once it's loaded.
